Vietnam in January

Surfing waves come to the coast of Vietnam in the autumn-winter period, January - good month to go surfing in Vietnam. But since waves in Vietnam are formed only due to storms in the South China Sea, it is necessary to understand that waves here are not as stable as ocean waves. This means that sometimes they may not be there. The most popular surfing spots in Vietnam are Mui Ne and Vung Tau, where sandy beaches predominate, but reef spots can also be found. In general, the classic surfing industry is still just developing in Vietnam. But if you decide to combine a pleasant beach vacation in the warm sea with surf training, then this a good option... For this reason, Vietnam is more suitable for families or groups of friends, where not everyone wants to learn to surf. If the main purpose of the trip is not just a beach vacation, but learning to surf, then it is better to choose one of the countries located on the ocean (see the beginning of the article).

Winter windsurfing is a sailing sport that is able to find a large number of its fans in the cold season. The basis of vigorous activity is skating on frozen water. Ideally, skiing is carried out on clear ice or a very thin layer of snow. Only experienced athletes who understand can safely ride in deep snow.

Windsurfing history

How did people understand that winter windsurfing has its own right to exist? Everything began to develop actively in Europe immediately after the onset of the 20th century. In those years, people possessed disabilities for an exciting pastime, therefore, serious attempts were made in order to diversify leisure time.

Europeans in the 20th century did not travel around. But they were ready to enjoy ice skating, which they managed to modernize into windsurfing. Unfortunately, history has not preserved the name of the one who allowed the sail to be used even in winter. The idea of sports was fully consistent with the trend of that era, because people tried to successfully conquer any challenge (snow, strong gusts of wind, cold) and effectively realize the strengths possessed by every healthy and active person.

It was in those years that people tested themselves in the following ways:

  • mastering flights in the air at various;
  • conducting transcontinental travel;
  • making numerous discoveries and inventions.

It is not surprising that people began to learn about windsurfing on ice, which initially provided the opportunity to experience inherent potential and find ways to manifest physical abilities.

Then a special sail appeared, allowing you to enjoy skiing in the cold season. It was possible to use a natural wood frame, which had a wide bottom and a tapered top. A special fabric was stretched over the frame, made in a verified trapezoidal shape. The structure was not attached to anything, so the rolling person had to hold it by a special crossbar. It is important to note that many Europeans initially loved skiing, but then they successfully submitted to the novelty of the sport and switched to windsurfing. For easy movement, the original sail shape was replaced with a triangular design, and the athlete could easily hold and control his direction without any problems.

In the middle of the 20th century, a period of trials began in Europe: the war, the post-war period. People had to give up skis with sails. Despite this, winter windsurfing returned to the list of leisure activities in the early 1970s. In addition, windsurfing quickly became a sport of its own. The end of the XX century brought a revival of the beloved sport.

The following regions turned out to be the most demanded corners:

  • Leningrad region;
  • Arkhangelsk region;
  • The Gulf of Finland;
  • Ladoga lake;
  • Lake Onega;
  • Estonia;
  • White Sea.

It is not surprising that windsurfing in winter won particular fame in Europe, whose residents clearly understood the benefits of such sports leisure.

Currently, annual championships are held dedicated to windsurfing and contributing to its popularity.

Preparing for self-study: choosing a board

Which winter windsurf board is suitable for independent practice?

One of the most interesting options is an iceboard that is as close to. In this case, a skating structure with a reinforced mast is provided. It is important to note that the iceboard appears even in international sporting events, and the numerous design variations deserve special attention. The iceboard is ideal even for learning:

  • stability;
  • easy control;
  • the ability to slide easily in the wind at a speed of more than three meters per second;

An iceboard is a worthy proposition for beginners who are only planning to test their potential.

What to do if the ice is covered with a layer of snow and iceboarding becomes more difficult? In this case, only a 2-ski construction will do. It will require a suspension, long edge alpine skis. If you take care of reliable crepes and bots, you can start active skiing without any problems. In this case, ice skating gains extra features, as the requirement for the strength of the wind becomes more pronounced. Moreover, it will not be possible to develop very high speed. But fortunately, you can experience high-speed driving on snow, and not just on the ice surface.

Knowing which winter windsurf board is best for your practice, it is imperative that you understand the clear safety rules.

Features of the upcoming skiing in winter

Windsurfing involves high speeds and amazing dynamism. Of course, windsurfing in winter can be spectacular. But at the same time, you need to understand what safety rules it is desirable to take into account.

Windsurfing is a high-speed and dynamic sport

The weather conditions in winter are not always acceptable, so the safety requirements are becoming serious. It is imperative to take care of:

  • helmet;
  • knee pads;
  • glasses.

In some cases, it is necessary to additionally protect the elbows and back. A warm ski suit is no less important, allowing you to forget about any frost.

It is advisable to conduct classes in windy weather and on an ice surface with a thin layer of snow, since only in this case it is possible to successfully control the sail and the direction of the path. It is important to note that the 2-ski construction, which has been successfully used for winter sailing, is similar to summer windsurfing: athletes can place their feet behind the hinge. On a monoski it was impossible!

Windsurfing, which occurs in winter, deserves attention. But it must be cognized, comprehended!

Surfing in Russia in January.

No matter how skeptical you are about surfing in Russia, it not only exists, but also boldly claims to destroy such a stereotype as "summer sport". In all regions of our country, the guys did not close the season, but continue to skate.

The waves are beautiful as always.

Anton goes into the water, there is snow on the beach.

The guys from Kamchatka were surfing farthest to the north in January. Anton Morozov, together with photographer Elena Safonova, filmed surfing on Khalaktyrsky beach. Here is what Lena writes in social media. networks.

"Yesterday (January 23rd, ed.) Went to the ocean for the first time this year. We could have done it earlier, but there was no road after the snowstorms. The air temperature in the morning was about minus 20 degrees, and maybe less, in neighboring Vilyuchinsk it was minus 27 . The water temperature is about freezing. "

From my own experience, I can say that the coldest thing is not to ride, but to get out of the water. In such a minus, the water on the wetsuit instantly freezes, but the surfer generally finds himself in super cold.

Warm clothes, a car, food and hot drinks save the day.

Sasha and Vitya.

Although Vladivostok is located at the latitude of Sochi, the climate here is different. There is a lot of snow and ice floats in the water. The guys here are also not afraid of the cold and ride among the mini icebergs. A team of surfers Viktor Mikhailyuk, Sasha Gizatulin and photographer Veronika Kragoda set off on January 30 to Russky Island.

This is what Sasha Gizatulin writes about skating that day.

“Once, in a cold winter season, we went ashore ... in general, the frost was not so strong) -5. Water +1. When entering the water near the canal, small ice floes floated, but they did not become a particular hindrance. 1.5 meter waves and the complete absence of anyone on the line-up). Me and my friend Viktor recently returned from Bali, where it's not a secret for anyone the competition on the lanape is quite severe)). Here, on our native coast, we are like children rejoiced that absolutely all the waves are ours. "

"After an hour of surfing, I began to inflate the offshore and from nearby bays along the coast, it began to build up ice at a very fast speed. Within a few tens of minutes, ice sludge and pieces of ice covered the left side of the bay and the channel turned into a river with icebergs))). a couple more good waves, it's time to go ashore, so as not to harm your health.
These are the wonderful waves that the Sea of Japan gives us. All peace, good waves and take care of yourself. "

Falling in such cold waves is a separate experience. This year, after one strong fall, I got so much water in my nose that I was sick for another three weeks.

Surfing in winter "YES"

Why did you decide to change snow drifts, tons of warm clothes and skis for palm trees, shorts and surfing in winter, having escaped to the ocean? Tell your grandmother. And to give us qualified advice, you just need to know this: you are interested in surfing in water up to 20 degrees in a wetsuit or above 20 and without ?!))

Let's start with warmer places)

Sri Lanka

She is "Ceylon dacha", an island in the Indian Ocean

for surfers, as well as for other tourists, there is a rule "visa on arrival", which is set for 30 days of stay. You can pay for it online on the consulate's website in advance, saving $ 5-6 of money (half a day of renting a board, by the way) and a lot of time so as not to stand in line at the airport upon arrival☝️️. After the first 30 days, the visa can be extended again for 30 or 60 days (90 in total) at the Colombo Visa Application Center (capital).
A visa delay of 1-2 days in previous years was the norm, the penalty for which was a monetary fine in the amount of the visa itself. But from year to year, the punishment increases.

Wave season:

our winter in Sri Lanka, the southern and south-western coast works well: Matara, Mirisa, Weligama, Midigama, Hikkaduwa - from November to March inclusive. It is especially “hot” at the very beginning of the season and starting from the second half of February.

for surfers, there are several friendly airlines that carry the island and the surfboard in the free baggage allowance
Etihad, Qatar and Emirates have good tickets if booked early;

If you plan to take the board on the spot, then the following airlines are perfect:
FlyDubai, AirIndia, China southerns.

Accommodation:

If you are planning independent skiing, then it is better to take care of a hotel room closer to the spot on which you plan to ride most of your time; or a room in a guesthouse with a kitchen;
If you are planning to visit a surf school, then it is better to choose housing as close to the school as possible to save time and logistics: Weligama or Mirisa are ideal for the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka.

Spots and level of skiing:
For the first “steps on the water”, you definitely need to go to Weligama, on a comfortable and safe spot for training with a sandy bottom;
For those who continue, it will be interesting to try their hand at the slow reef waves Midigama left (left midigama) and Mirisa left (left Mirisa);
For advanced people who can read the ocean on their own, there are more than enough options:
⁃ Plantation
⁃ Jungle
⁃ Mirisa right
⁃ Madiha right
Well, for super active extreme surfers there is an excellent dessert in the form of aggressive trumpeting waves: Kabalana (Cabalana), Midigama right / Rams (right midigama or ramz), Madiha left (left Madya)

Surf infrastructure:

That in Hikkaduwa, that in Midigama and of course in Weligama, year after year, the choice of boards at the box office becomes richer (on long term the price is more attractive, you have to bargain); and Wax, and Finns, and lichens are always in local, albeit still scarce in assortment, surf shops (located along the main road along the ocean); well, in the event of a breakdown, there are a couple of workshops in Midigama and Weligama where you can fix the breakdown: it is true that prices, terms and quality should be carefully discussed in advance🙌🌊🏄; well, if you are looking for a Russian-speaking company in the person of students, instructors and guides, then we will be glad to see you in our WSGS surf school 🎉🙌

Siargao

the iconic Philippine island at the end of the world) in the Pacific Ocean

Visa-free entry to the country gives 30 days of stay on any of the islands. If you plan to catch waves longer than this period, you will need a visa. You can do it in advance in Russia 1-2 days for $ 45. Or upon arrival in the Philippines, spending $ 10-20 more.
Violation of the visa regime of stay is good-natured and painlessly punishable by acceptable monetary fines);

Wave season:

Our winter on the island is a high and active wave season (from December to April), along with the typhoon season; which can darken with tropical night rains and winds, Sometimes blowing waves in open spots: Semetri, Dako, Pacifico.

The route to Siargao lies through Cebu with the Cebu pacific airlines of the same name, which can only be bypassed by ferry.
An ideal flight to Cebu with Emirates, Singapore AL and Cathay Pacific (Cathay Pacific), with one stop and a free allowance for the first two: 300 cm - the sum of three dimensions; and payment of $ 100 for a cover with boards at the latter; A large number of good flights with surfer-friendly airlines to Manila (capital of the Philippines): Etihad and Qatar - the norm of transportation is usually 23 kg, the length of the covers can close their eyes) ... or they can open it.
When buying a ticket for the last leg to Siargao, do not forget to pay $ 10-15 for an “extra piece of baggage” of 15kg in both directions, which will give you permission to carry the boards. On the spot, it is many times more expensive, and there is no other way).

Accommodation:

The lion's share of hotels for every taste and budget is located along the road that runs along the ocean from the town of General Luna to Cloud 9 (Cloud Nine): 10 minutes by public transport));
Going to ride on the reef serious spots, people settle closer to the boat station Cloud Nine. Choosing easier spots, people settle closer to General Luna, there is less fuss.
Everything is close, everything is near.

Spots and level of skiing:

For beginners, there are a couple of spots that differ from the usual sandy beaches along the coast in that they are located at some distance from the coast and this is a flat reef; therefore, an experienced surf instructor is a must.
The following breaks will be interesting for those who are continuing and with experience of independent skiing surfers:

  • Cemetery left wave
  • Dako island right wave
  • Hawaiian Jack right
  • Stimpies left
  • Rock island (rock) right
  • Well, for lovers of cabbage soup, “washing mashine”, reef walks and broken boards, the following list of waves is perfect:
  • the business card of the island is the right wave cloud 9 (Cloud Nine), blowing to the swelled from 3 feet;
  • Tuasson (tuason) left heavy;
  • Pansukian and Pacifico;

There are many spots and most of them are located far from the coast, which requires not only an understanding of which wave is working and when, but also a boat transfer.

Surf infrastructure:

The center of all the action and surfing life is concentrated along the road from General Luna to Cloud 9:
Bright and large announcements on the left and on the right give a clear understanding that “there is a rental of boards”, “there is a surf shop”, and “there are bikes for rent”)) - they say that this is Kuta 20 years ago).
The assortment of boards for hire is rather scarce for short and specific models; the presence of consumables: lichen, wax, finns are almost always there), but with reef slippers there are serious interruptions;
repair of boards is usually quick and of high quality;
There is a problem with schools on the island: there are no such schools on Siargao (, foreign ones. But there is a Russian one.

Bali

Mecca of surfing), an island in Indonesia, washed by the Indian Ocean

The large friendly country Indonesia has allowed visa-free travel to Bali by abolishing the visa fee. Hooray). Upon arrival, stamp in the passport and travel and surf for 30 days at your pleasure. If you need a visa for a long time, you will have to attend to the consulate of the country in advance. But don't rush to stay long.
Delay ...?

Wave season:

Russian winter in Bali summer-rainy season (mainly at night) - low wave season from December to March. The east coast of Greenball, Noosa, Keramas, Geger, Serangan operates. Legendary Kuta has a rest, both from the waves and from surfers - tourists.

Only a lazy air carrier does not fly to the Mecca of surfing, and it is natural that the flow is greater - surfboards are taken on board for free. The exception is the flights of European companies through the capitals of the states of the old world:
AirBerlin via Berlin) and LuftHansa via Frankfurt will ask for boards from 50 € to 150 € one way, FinAir via Helsinki will ask 100 €, British via sunny London - hurray, free of charge.
Arab friends Etihad, Qatar and Emirates - the main carriers - are getting easier and better, but there are also nuances).
The former are great at carrying all surfboards from shortboards to longboards, limiting the length to 300cm (about 10 feet);
At the second one, without any problems, you can carry boards up to 8 feet (240 cm) - Malibu;
Well, the third company for the limit of free transportation of surfboards takes 300 cm by the sum of three dimensions: that is, boards up to 7-7'2 feet are guaranteed;
If you are flying a difficult compound route, where you will most likely have to pay for the transportation of your babies, then choose trusted companies: AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Garuda.

Accommodation:

This issue should be given perhaps more attention than usual if you go to ride yourself. And maybe vice versa - in any case, you will have to go to the east coast with spots. The only question is "how much to drive ?!" and how long?!")). By renting a moped, you can look for housing anywhere). And when choosing a company of students and a surf school - settle, again, as close as possible to the school itself or in a hotel at the school.

Spots and level of skiing:

It is natural to master the basics of surfing on the safe sandy spot of Kuta. But be prepared for the fact that at this time of the year it is slightly dirty there: the ocean waves and tides throws various debris on the shore.
Reef spots from Greenball to Serangan are suitable for the advanced; it is important to understand the strength and size of the waves and be able to try it on to your level of riding in order to avoid injuries, board breakage and slight embarrassment)).

Surf infrastructure:

The east coast, which works well at this time of year, is not as developed as Kuta or Chongu. Therefore, the choice of boards for rent, the necessary consumables and repair / repairs should still be sought in the good old Kuta or tried in the place where you settled. Like surf shops
If you flew to the island for a short time, then you should not waste time trying to figure out which spot and how to go there - take a surfguide or surf trip, saving time, nerves, and sometimes a lot of money.
It is naturally better to take training and all surf services at a surf school, having previously discussed the questions you are interested in:

  • number of lessons
  • number of students in the group
  • etc

Our friends at Endless Summer will be happy to teach you and answer your questions.

Someone is waiting for winter to open the ski season and take their souls away on the snowy slopes, while someone rushes. January surfing is not a hindrance! On the contrary: winter is the season itself. The wind and waves are stronger than ever. As well as the desire of those who conquer them. Top 6 best surfing spots in January reviewed from.

Hawaii (USA)

The place is not just glorified. Hawaii is the home of this sport. And therefore surfing is not fond of here, they live. The same can be said about newcomers. They idolize the waves here. Don't miss three of the beaches: Waikiki in Honolulu and Pipeline with Sunset. Most surfing films are shot on the latter - the waves often reach 10 meters.

Bali (Indonesia)

One of the best surfing spots in January is Kuta Resort, one of the best surfing spots in all of Indonesia. Novice surfers love this place for its sandy beaches and lack of rocks. As a nice bonus - the best nightclubs and the darkness of shops. There are many surf schools in Kuta, almost at every specialized store. One of the most famous is at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Canary Islands (Spain)

Almost the entire coast of the islands is a lot of spots - completely different, for every taste and skill, mainly beach break or point break. Keep in mind that the air temperature in winter here does not rise above +20. The most popular islands for tourists and surfers are the same: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The latter is a seemingly very modest, but incredibly attractive island. Those who know a lot about real waves call it a separate surf-state. What else is needed for happiness: eternal sun, many spots for riders of different levels, saturated night life and all the delights of an ocean lifestyle.

Morocco (Africa)

You can ride in Morocco all year round, but the most luxurious waves are here in winter. One of the most surfing places is the village of Tarazut, which is not far from Agadir. The village of Tamrat is located 4 kilometers from it, which is also worth a look. Surfing in Morocco is also good because there are few people on the beaches, and there are many unexplored places.

California (USA)

California is one of America's premier surfing destinations. Yes, there is also Hawaii and Florida, but there will be more spots here. In winter, you need to go to the south of the state, namely to. It will be comfortable for surfers of any level. Rub your board and choose beaches: Malibu, Zuma Beach, Venice Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.

Fortaleza and Gostosu (Brazil)

These two settlements may not be on everyone's lips, but surfers hold them in high esteem. The beaches of Fortaleza will pamper you with a good wind in winter and, accordingly, a good wave. The coast of the Gostosu village is considered the 4th in the list of the best kite spots in the world. Agree, a solid indicator.
