How to divide by a column

The method of dividing into a column is simple and convenient if you don’t have a calculator at hand, and it’s difficult to calculate the quotient in your mind.

In what follows, we will use the following concepts:
  • the dividend is the number we are dividing;
  • divisor - what we divide by;
  • the quotient is the result of the division operation.
For division by a column, the record must be rewritten in such a way that the “corner” separates the dividend and the divisor, as shown in the figure. We will enter a quotient in a free corner.

Look at the first digit of the dividend. If it is less than the divisor, compare with the divisor a two-digit number consisting of the first two digits of the dividend. We have found that in the example under consideration this is just such a case. A two-digit number is greater than the divisor. We find their private, we write down under a corner. Then we multiply the quotient and the divisor and sign the result under our two-digit dividend. We subtract the smaller from the larger, draw a horizontal line, write the result under it (this is the remainder of the division). If the remainder is greater than the divisor, look for an error!

Now we lower the next digit of the dividend to our remainder. Again, we compare the resulting number with the divisor, if it is less, we add the next one, but we attribute 0 to the quotient. So, we have isolated a number that exceeds the divisor from the divisible. We repeat the steps of the previous paragraph.

We repeat the algorithm of the 4th paragraph until all the digits of the dividend are “lowered”. If the last remainder is less than the divisor, the solution is complete. If the remainder is zero, then the dividend is evenly divisible by the divisor. As a result, we get as a private number under the "corner". Do not forget to check: multiply the quotient with the divisor, if the result is equal to the dividend, then the solution was found correctly.

Do not be afraid of the type of record, having figured out once in the division by a column, you will understand how easy and convenient it is to count in this way.
